A Brief Overview of Suikoden STAR LEAP Game on Mobile (Android / iOS)

Genso Suikoden STAR LEAP is the first original mainline-style Suikoden RPG in more than a decade, and the first built from the ground up for phones. It launched in Japan on August 7, 2026 for iOS and Android. A global mobile version (english) and Steam client are confirmed, but Konami has not set dates yet.

The official line is simple: new 108 Stars, a new tale of runes, same world and same Solar Calendar as the numbered games.

Where It Sits in History (Suikoden Universe)

The story opens in Solar Year 453, after Suikoden V (449–450) and before Suikoden I (455–457). That puts it two years before McDohl’s war and in the same year Odessa Silverberg begins gathering what will become the Liberation Army.

A lakeside village east of the Scarlet Moon Empire is attacked without warning. Houses burn. People flee. When the threat passes, the Hero (Konami uses the name Chao for promotional materials and trailers, but like in previous Suikoden titles, we are free to give him a name), son of village chief Hou — stays behind with Hisui, Shirin, and Shapur to rebuild. The local job does not stay local. The party is pulled into imperial politics, the early shape of the Liberation Army, and the True Rune at the center of the game: the Rune of Change.

Konami’s tagline for the journey is “For our precious one.”

Why this is still a Suikoden game

The series always sold the same fantasy: one person, 108 companions, a headquarters that grows as the roster grows, and a war that is bigger than any single duel.

STAR LEAP keeps that skeleton.

  • The 108 Stars of Destiny in this game are a new set. Konami has said the story Stars can be recruited through the main scenario without pulling gacha. Extra versions, older/younger takes, and characters imported from other titles sit on the paid side.
  • The village is the castle. Facilities unlock as people join. Cooking, logging, trading posts, training, and the usual “someone lives here now” texture are part of daily play, not flavor text.
  • Combat is a timeline turn-based system with a six-person party split into front and back rows. You pick normal attacks, runes, and special techniques. Separate from that is War Mode, a real-time command layer for army clashes — the series’ old “this fight is not one party versus one boss” idea, adapted for a phone screen.

The art direction is “deep pixel”: sprite characters against richer, dimensional backgrounds. It is meant to feel like early Suikoden without looking like a port of 1995.

Main character designs come from Moryo. A long list of guest illustrators handles later portraits. Scenario work includes cooperation from Kazuyoshi Tsugawa, who wrote Suikoden V. Theme song is “Campanula” by Kaho Nakamura.

The first circle

The opening cast is small on purpose.

  • The Hero (Tomohiro Ono) — Hou’s son. Kind, stubborn, the person the village still looks at after the fire.
  • Hisui (Hika Tsukishiro) — a servant in the Hero’s house who keeps her feelings locked down. Early story makes her more than staff: she is tied to the Rune of Change itself.
  • Shirin (Fairouz Ai) — childhood friend, fighter, wide social net.
  • Shapur (Takuya Sato) — Hou’s right hand.
  • Around them: sister Yua (Liyuu), tavern keeper Orhan (Kazuhiko Inoue), trader Farah, guard Flanagan, and the Rarby storyteller Stendhal, who has already decided the Hero’s life is a book.

Then the old names walk in. Odessa is still an imperial noble with a conscience, not yet the martyr of the Gate Rune War. Flik and Viktor show up as wandering steel. Viki exists, because of course she does. Seeing them before the wars players already know is the point of setting the game in 453.

What “free-to-play” actually means here

STAR LEAP is free with in-app purchases. The pitch from the team is that the Suikoden experience — gathering people, rebuilding a home, watching a small story become a historical one — should work on a commute. Producer Shinya Fujimatsu has described it as a mix of console-scale story and music with mobile access.

That is also the risk. The 108 story Stars being earnable in-plot is the line that keeps long-time fans from writing it off as a gacha with a logo. Everything else — speed-ups, alts, imported faces — is where the shop lives.

Japan is live. Everyone else is on the Steam wishlist and waiting for Konami to name a date.

Why it matters

Suikoden spent years as remasters, concerts, and memory. STAR LEAP is the first time since Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki (2012) that Konami shipped an original RPG in the franchise, and the first original story on the main Solar Calendar since Suikoden V in 2006.

It is not a remake of McDohl’s war. It is the year the village burned, the year a True Rune woke up in a servant girl’s chest, and the year a noblewoman named Odessa had not yet chosen the hill she would die on.

If the series still works, it works because one village and 108 names can still tilt an empire. STAR LEAP is Konami testing whether that sentence still holds on a phone.
